There's nothing quite like a few good talks to get me motivated to go into the lab for the day.

Very trippy movie, I highly suggest it

Because the data tells me so.

For those of you who don't like fiddling around with graphs as much as me, then here's Hans Rosling talking about what it all means.

This is how I roll:

That's right. One of the first things you do coming into physics is give up numbers and replace them with letters of the alphabet. Pretty soon that's not enough, and we dive into the Greek alphabet. But even then, once you are adequately surrounded by that which is Physics, we don't even use Greek letters any more, we use pictures. That's right. Physics math by pictures.

By the way, those diagonal lines pointing downward? Yeah, they represent the lack of a particle travelling backwards in time.

I wish I was cool enough to make this shit up.

Hey there peoples, I was curious...what's everyone's favorite song?

1) The Hate Crimes Bill passed recently, which protects all LGBT people.

2) The Employment Non-Discrimination Act (EDNA), to be voted on in the near future, is having "gender identity and gender expression" removed from the people it protects (meaning that it will only protect those on the basis of sexual orientation).

3) The HRC, one of the key lobbying groups for EDNA, is the only group involved with getting this bill going who has said "Well, sucks for trans people, but think about the rights the rest of us will have!" (Not a direct quote, but basic idea) This is coming from a group that in 2004 vowed to never leave behind transgender people in their fight for rights, but as soon as that fight comes to a head, we're left behind.

4) I need to find a new bumper sticker to replace my HRC one.

5) There is a possible rally going on in DC next Saturday at the place where the HRC is holding a dinner and one of the key people who took trans people out of EDNA is their keynote speaker. Don't know if I'm going or not yet, I need to see what else develops.

Things You Can Do To Save Gender Identity in ENDA

Congressman Barney Frank and the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, are attempting to scuttle a trans-inclusive the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) by introducing a separate bill covering sexual orientation only, as well as a token bill on gender identity. The vote is Tuesday in the Labor Committee so act now to stop this divisive tactic.

* If you are in San Francisco , Join us tomorrow morning (Monday, October 1st) for a 24 vigil. We will meet in front the Federal Building where Pelosi¬Ęs office is located. 450 Golden Gate , cross street is Polk Street . Meet at 8AM. Wear black. We are casualties of the equality battle.

* If you can come to Washington D.C. , Picket House Speaker Nancy Pelosi at HRC National Gala In Washington , DC- Oct. 6

We've been kicked to the curb. Join us on the curb to picket the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, and demand an ENDA covering gender identity. As labor unionists we won't sell out any part of our community.

We call on all LGBT and allied organizations that support gender identity inclusion in ENDA to join us.

Meet at 4:15 p.m.; Picket begins at 4:30 before the Major Donors Reception and continues through the General Reception beginning at 6 PM.

Washington Convention Center
801 Mount Vernon Place, NW
(near 9th St & Mass Ave)
Washington DC

* Call Pelosi's office to urge her to include gender identity. Her number is (202) 225-4965.

* Call HRC at 800/777-4723. The only major LGBT group that has not come out against this betrayal is HRC, which will be holding its 11th Annual Gala next Saturday in Washington , DC . Congresswoman Pelosi is the keynote speaker for the dinner.

Only a few weeks ago, HRC leader Joe Solomonese pledged at a major transgender conference that HRC would outright oppose any federal anti-discrimination legislation that did not include gender identity. You can watch the video here.. Demand that he keep his word! Call their Toll-Free Number: 800/777-4723

* Call the Chair of the Committee where the legislation will be heard on Tuesday. Congressman George Miller at (202) 225-2095.

* Call Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey at (202) 225-5161. She also sits in this committee.
ellie_l: (I <3 Zombies)
It is a well known fact that in the United States zombies do not have the right to vote. Now, I was thinking about this shortly after I woke up from a dream in which zombies were free to roam the world without getting shot in the head. Are they not allowed to vote simply because they died and then rose from the dead, or are they unable to vote because that have been sort of "reborn" (unborn?) and would have to wait until they've been undead for 18 years to vote?

Some believe the feelings can be dispatched entirely if the child gets therapy early. That gives them a better chance of outgrowing their feelings, said Anna Solomon, a licensed independent social worker with the Center for Marital and Sexual Health, Beachwood. She is working with five children with gender issues, the youngest, 4.

"It's OK to cross-play, but preoccupation isn't," Solomon said. "If a parent has allowed the child to [cross-play] 3, 4 or 5 years, I work with them to backpedal and limit the time. My goal is to help the child feel comfortable in the gender they are.

"When they grow up and change gender, that's fine."

I really don't like that Anna Solomon is one of the current "experts" on gender therapy. She's almost right up there with Bailey. Everything I've heard about how she goes about things and the entire process that she makes her transitioning patients go through is incredibly archaic. And now here she is, telling kids to repress their gender identity until they hit some magical age where it suddenly becomes their choice. Because of course children don't know what it's like to be uncomfortable in their body, no, not until they're 18 and legal adults.

"What happened to your hair??"
"I got stuck in a cotton candy machine."
ellie_l: (OMG a penis!)
Old Lady #1: "Why is your hair blue?"
Me: "I was born that way."

Old Lady #2: ~stares at my head for a minute~ "...what happened to your hair??"
Me: "Global warming."
Old Lady #2 turns to Old Man #1 and says: "Fred, did you hear that?? Global warming's turned our lawn brown and this girl's hair blue!!"

Just something for those of you out there who think your Body Mass Index (BMI) means much. Score one for the mathematicians, it was created between 1830 and 1850 by Adolphe Quetelet in order to create social statistics. And if anyone knows me, you know I hate social statistics. Anyway, for convience, here is a link to the Wikipedia article on the BMI.
